World Health Organisation says Gaza's al-Shifa hospital is ‘a death zone’ - BBC News
The World Health Organization (WHO) has described al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City as a "death zone" after a visit to the site.
A joint UN team led by the WHO assessed the hospital for one hour following its occupation and evacuation by the Israeli military. The team said they saw evidence of shelling and gunfire and observed a mass grave.
Following an evacuation which the hospital director said was ordered by the Israeli army but which the army said was requested by the director, 300 critically ill patients remain in al-Shifa.
The WHO said it was trying to arrange the urgent evacuation of remaining patients and staff to other facilities in Gaza, and repeated calls for a ceasefire.

Israel says Yemen’s Houthis seize ship in Red Sea, no Israelis on board
Yemen’s Houthi rebels seized a cargo ship in the southern Red Sea as it sailed from Turkey to India, the Israeli military says.
It called the move “a very grave incident on a global level”.
In a social media post, the military added that the vessel, which it did not name, is not Israeli-owned and has no Israelis among its crew.
The Houthis, an ally of Iran, have been launching long-range missile and drone salvoes at Israel in solidarity with the Palestinians in recent weeks.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said his country is not involved in the vessel’s ownership, operation, or the makeup of its international crew.
What we understand is the shipping company is partly owned by an Israeli businessman and this wouldn’t be the first time one of his ships was intercepted. In 2021 one of his vessels was targeted.
The Houthi rebels in Yemen released a video statement about 12 hours ago saying they will begin targeting ships in the southern Red Sea that they deem to be Israeli because of the situation in Gaza.
That is a main shipping lane for the whole of the world. The Houthis are really trying to target Israel with drone and missile attacks – and now this. The international community will be quite concerned.

At least 8 killed in Israeli strikes on Indonesian Hospital
Staff at one of northern Gaza’s largest hospitals are appealing for urgent help from the UN and the Red Cross after Israeli forces surrounded the medical facility and bombarded the area, killing at least eight people in the hospital complex.
At least two doctors at the hospital were also injured during the repeated strikes.
The medical team told Al Jazeera that the hospital was targeted overnight without prior warning.
Earlier, one of our Gaza correspondents, Safwat al-Kahlout, said that it looks like Israeli forces are going to repeat what happened at al-Shifa Hospital and will also occupy the Indonesian Hospital.
Power has been shut at the hospital after its generator was hit by a strike, forcing its medics to operate on patients while using light from mobile phones, even as the bombardment went on.
Wafa also reported that Israeli artillery fire damaged the second floor of the hospital.
Aside from the estimated 150 wounded patients being treated at the hospital and about 100 medical workers, thousands of Palestinians are also sheltering at the hospital after being displaced by Israeli bombardments.

The Israelis felt pressured to accept this, and hence they don’t have good intentions going in.

They are accepting this pause bitterly, and they can’t wait until it’s over so they can continue with the invasion.

Even in the darkness, the utter devastation in northern Gaza is clear as day. The empty shells of buildings, illuminated by the last shreds of light, lurch out of the landscape on the dirt roads across the Gaza Strip. At night, the only signs of life are the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) vehicles that rumble the landscape, tightening the military’s grip on the northern sector.
On Saturday night, we traveled with the IDF into Gaza to see the newly exposed tunnel shaft discovered at the compound of Al-Shifa Hospital, the enclave’s largest medical facility.
After crossing the border fence at around 9:00 in the evening, our convoy of Humvees turned off its lights, relying on night vision goggles to traverse the Gaza Strip. We would spend the next six hours inside Gaza, much of that time spent getting back and forth from the tunnel shaft.
Along our path, virtually every building bore the scars of wartime damage. Many structures were destroyed entirely, while others were hardly recognizable as anything more than twisted me

Welcome back to our coverage of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

More Israeli hostages are due to be released today, on the third day of a four-day truce.

Further Palestinian prisoners are expected to be freed in return.

It is clearly a fluid situation, however.

Yesterday afternoon, Hamas said it was delaying the second release of Israeli hostages, claiming Israel had not kept to its side of the bargain. Israel said it was sticking to the truce agreement.

Eventually, Qatar's foreign ministry said the releases would go ahead.

Delayed release of more hostages, prisoners after deal nearly collapses | DW News
The Hamas militant group has handed over another batch of hostages.
The 13 Israelis and 4 Thai nationals are now safe in Israel after the Red Cross escorted them from Gaza. The release was delayed after Hamas accused Israel of preventing aid trucks from reaching northern Gaza.
Afterwards, Israel released another group of 39 Palestinians who had been held in Israeli prisons. This was the second group of Palestinian prisoners to be freed as part of the four-day truce between Israel and Hamas.
Hamas has only agreed to release 50 of about 240 hostages they're believed to be holding. Family members described an agonizing wait for the second release late Saturday night, as negotiations dragged on for hours, the deal almost collapsing before the captives were released. DW’s Ben Fajzullin spoke to some of them gathered in central Tel Aviv who say they won't rest until all the hostages are freed.

Over 14,000 Palestinians have been killed, one-third of them children, since the onset of Israel’s siege in Gaza on October 9th, according to the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry. It followed the October 7 attacks by Hamas that killed 1,200 people in Israel and around 240 were taken hostage.

Phosphorus used in Gaza, British-Palestinian doctor says | Israel-Hamas war
A British-Palestinian surgeon who worked in both al Shifa and al Ahli hospitals in Gaza after the war broke out says he treated phosphorus burns.

"We started seeing phosphorus burns. I had treated white phosphorous burns in the Gaza Strip during the 2009 war," Professor Ghassan Abu Sitta claimed.

At the burns unit in al Shifa, he said some 40-45% of the wounded were children, and the primary target of the bombing was residential homes.

In a statement the IDF said it "uses only legal weapons and ammunition".

Israel and Hamas have agreed to extend the temporary truce in Gaza, just minutes before it was due to expire.

The pause in fighting was due to expire at 05:00 GMT, but the Israeli military said it will be extended "in light of the mediators' efforts to continue the process of releasing the hostages".
On Wednesday evening, another 16 hostages taken captive by Hamas were released, as were 30 Palestinians.
It is thought that around 145 people remain in captivity.

Thailand's resort town of Pattaya is still a center of international sex tourism. Since the coronavirus is no longer an obstacle to travel, hundreds of thousands of men from all over the world are again flocking to the country in search of women and sex.

Go-go bars, seedy massage parlors and plenty of open-air beer stalls with scantily clad young women: All this is part of the draw for sex tourists of all ages, here in the coastal metropolis of Pattaya on Thailand's west coast. After a pandemic pause, sex tourism is returning to what passes for normal here.

One German tourist sums it up for the camera: "Why are we all here? Here you get more sex for less money!" A younger German doesn't agree: "I'm not looking for sex here, I'm looking for love," says Stefan, complaining that his numerous conquests are always after his money in the end.

The "red light vacationers" have been waiting for two years: Pattaya's huge entertainment district lay completely fallow due to Covid-19. For the city's approximately 60,000 sex workers, this was a threatening situation. Because the Thai state generates billions in tax revenue from the sex business, but prostitution is officially banned, those working in the trade were excluded from all government aid programs. Take sex worker Aom, for example. She became pregnant by a German client who initially swore to stand by her, before abandoning her with the baby. Now Aom is using a lawyer to try to at least enforce child support payments, while she continues to work in the sex trade. "I'm done with German clients," she says.

The documentary delves into Pattaya's red-light scene -- and documents a lot of hypocrisy. Some German sex tourists convince themselves that their payments ensure the survival of impoverished Thai families. One restaurant owner from northern Germany tells the filmmakers that the girls only stand on the side of the road in such short skirts because of the warm weather here.
Tour operators also earn money from the sex business, even if they don't like to talk about it. All of them have Pattaya in their program. German tour operators are proud of the fact that they have signed a commitment to take action against child prostitution. But who monitors that?

The coronavirus lockdown massively aggravated the problem of abuse. In the red-light district of Pattaya, where according to local officials there is no longer any prostitution of minors, the film team comes across evidence of pedophilia crimes. And a German national who is still able to leave the country shortly after his arrest. How can this be? When it comes to this important issue, is international cooperation actually delivering?

Renewed fighting in Gaza has stretched into a second day after a truce deal between Israel and Hamas expired early Friday. Explosions lit up the night sky over the eastern part of Khan Younis, as international concern grew over Israeli plans to expand its offensive to the south of the Strip. The Israeli military says it has carried out some 400 strikes on "terrorist targets" since fighting resumed, with Khan Younis seeing some of the most intense bombardment since the war started. Ambassador: 'Israel is not abandoning hostages in aim to destroy Hamas' | Israel-Hamas war
Israel's ambassador to the UK, Tzipi Hotovely, pushed back on Trevor Phillips' question of whether Israel's aim to destroy Hamas has resulted in abandoning hostages.

Israel has confirmed that a ground offensive has begun in southern Gaza. It said it would be “no less powerful” than its offensive in the north of the territory.
The Hamas-run health authorities in Gaza says at least 15,500 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel began its military operation.
Since a week-long ceasefire ended, Israel has resumed its massive bombardment of Gaza. Residents of Khan Younis described it as the heaviest wave of attacks so far.

Reports suggest that Israeli troops have moved into the southern half of Gaza. Meanwhile, the United Nations Climate Summit, COP-28, is underway in Dubai with a renewed urgency to tackle climate change and cut greenhouse gas emissions.
